Tanner’s Totally TollRoadKill Chili

Originally known as Tanner’s Chili until the recent events of the “Access Oklahoma” plan by the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority to destroy our land…. anyways that’s another story and I hate online recipes that write a whole story, instead of just listing the recipe.  So here we go!

Serves: 6-8 (estimated)
Prep Time: 15-30 minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours

Ingredients

  • 2lbs Hamburger Meat (Or Venison Hamburger)
  • 1/2 White Onion
  • 2 Jalapeños
  • 8 Tomatoes on the vine
  • 10oz Can of Rotel – Hatch (Diced Tomatoes & Fire Roasted Hatch Chilies)
  • 14.5-16oz Can of Stewed Tomatoes
  • 2 x16oz Cans of Dark Red Kidney Beans
  • 2 Pkgs of McCormick Chili Seasoning (We use the 30% Less Sodium packs)
  • Montreal Steak Seasoning
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Rosemary (optional)
  • Oregano (optional)
  • Pepper
  • 1/2 Stick of Butter

Prep

  1. Cut the onion into wedges and separate.
  2. Deseed the jalapeños (optional), then mince.

  3. Cube the tomatoes in 1/2″-1″ chunks.
  4. Season the hamburger meat with Montreal Steak Seasoning, the Italian seasoning, and pepper. Season to your taste. I add in additional Rosemary and Oregano.

Cooking

  1. In a large frying pan, sauté the onion and jalapeños with the stick of butter.

  2. Once the onions and jalapeños are slightly browned, add in the tomatoes, and stew. Please a lid on the frying pan if you have one.  Cook until tomatoes have broken down and are soft.

  3. Pour tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños into a large stewing pot and set aside (or place on low heat).

  4. Brown the hamburger meat in the frying pan, then add to the stewing pot.

  5. Pour in the Kidney Beans, Rotel, Stewed Tomatoes, and Chili Seasoning and mix thoroughly.

  6. Cook on medium heat for an hour stirring occasionally.  Reduce heat after an hour if you wish to cook longer to allow more time for it to stew together and enhance the flavor.
  7. Add your favorite chili toppings and devour!
